‘Dupe’ giant MCoBeauty seeks to dismiss lawsuit from Sol de Janeiro over lookalike body spray

Australian makeup ‘dupe’ brand MCoBeauty has filed to dismiss a US lawsuit brought by skincare giant Sol de Janeiro, in a test of intellectual property rights that could potentially reshape the global market for lookalike cosmetics.

The Australian reports MCoBeauty, the billion-dollar business built on low-cost alternatives to name brands, last month sought to throw out claims brought by Sol de Janeiro relating to both brands’ body sprays.

Sol de Janeiro in 2024 filed an intellectual property lawsuit accusing MCoBeauty of copying key elements of its Cheirosa body mists for its own product line.
