The Fair Work Commission (FWC) has provisionally backed an emergency plan forcing businesses to lift the fuel reimbursements offered to truckies as war in the Middle East sends diesel prices soaring.

Responding to union fears that elevated fuel prices could crush the transport sector, the FWC on Tuesday published a draft order compelling businesses to offer extra financial support to the drivers in their network.

If enacted, the fast-tracked order would force businesses to lift fuel reimbursements “by the amount necessary to ensure that the other primary party recovers the increased cost of fuel”.
