New fuel outage dashboard shows promise (and limits) of vibe-coding

It has “never been easier” for non-technical founders to launch a real product, says the creator of a fuel outage dashboard built after 12 hours of vibe-coding.

But the learning curve is still steep, said Tom Mitchelhill, creator of fuel dashboard CheckPetrol, whose experience outlines the promise and limitations of today’s AI-powered coding tools.

Mitchelhill debuted CheckPetrol in late March, after the Iran war constricted global fuel supply and contributed to outages at petrol stations across Australia.

The website consists of a live map of service stations, whether they have petrol and diesel fuel available, and the cost per litre motorists can expect to pay.
